This post informs its readers that if there cell gets stolen then they can send their IMEI number to an email id given as cop@vsnl.net and they will get the details of the location where there Cell Phone is located even if they have not registered the Complaint with Police and even if the number(SIM card) has been changed from the cell, you need to lodge a formal complaint. If you have lost your cellphone, you should directly approach your nearest Police Station and follow the procedure as would be advised by them. Expecting an email from the above email id without registering any complaint with your Local Police Station is not at all recommended.

The email id
provided is of COMMISSIONER OFFICE of Chennai and if you send any email from
around the Country(India) or around the World it will go there. There has been
instances where the Chennai Police have solved the cases of Mobile Theft as per
the report here . They might be still accepting the request of Complaints over
the email but that would (in any case) will be applicable only for Particular
State and not any City/State/country beyond the range. This service doesn't
cater areas beyond its jurisdiction. Sharing the information without beyond the
area of jurisdiction amounts to spreading of misleading information. This could
lead to flooding of the email inbox of the concerned Department (for the cases
which in reality would not be under their region.)
This is how it works!!!!!!
1. Type *#06# from your mobile.
2. Your mobile shows a unique 15 digit.
3. Note down this no anywhere but except your mobile as this is the no which will help trace your mobile in case of a theft.
4. Once stolen you just have to mail this 15 digit IMEI no. to cop@vsnl.net (details of the email below),
5. Need a police diary (for future documentation).
6. Your Mobile will be traced within next 24 hrs via a complex system of GPRS and internet.
7. You will find where your hand set is being operated even in case your no is being changed.
PASS ON THIS

Therefore, if you are not in Chennai, never send such an
email to the said address (or else it will be useless, and will jeopardize the
proceedings of many genuine cases (due to enormous amount of flooding and
irrelevant complaints).
Keep such generous service alive, by keeping it spam-free
and if you want similar service in your
area/state, contact your police commissioner to setup such service. Its your
right for being a citizen, that the State would do everything to protect your
legitimate property, specially when they already have the system installed
(used currently for investigation purposes/to track the criminals).
Demand your right... Be a part of this
movement...
Demand your state police to make such
services public. Chennai has already set an example before them...
Its their turn now.,,
